Our History

The Stevenage Family History Society was established in the Summer of 2003.

A leaflet outlining the founding member’s ideas was distributed in order to gauge the level of interest which resulted in over 30 responses. A meeting was arranged and the Stevenage Family History Society was born!

Since 2003 the Society has grown steadily and we now have 40 regular members. 

Individual interests are varied, with members researching families from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Others have areas of special interest e.g. military matters, resulting in a wealth of experience that can be called on.

“The Workhouse”

a talk by Hilary Tily

In her talk, Society member Hilary will describe what life was like for our workhouse ancestors. Were our ancestors justified in dreading going into the workhouse, or have workhouses just had a "bad press"? Come along and judge for yourselves.

The Society meets on the first Wednesday of each month at The Friends Meeting House, Cutty’s Lane, Stevenage SG1 1UP (click here for map). Doors open at 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start.

A varied programme is organised, to include presentations from professional speakers as well as Society members.

There is always time to sit and discuss your recent research and get help from others over a cup of tea and a biscuit.

We produce three Journals a year, full of informative and interesting articles written by Society members

Regular trips are arranged to the National Archives at Kew as well as relevant shows such as the very popular ‘Who Do You Think You Are Live’, held each Spring at Olympia, London.

We welcome visitors to our meetings and those interested in joining the Society. The first meeting is free, unless there is an external speaker, when the fee is £3.
